(Mandatory for all first-time freshmen)
Transitioning from high school to college can sometimes be stressful. To help ease the stress, San Jose State University offers a mandatory orientation for all first time freshmen. Each summer during the months of June and July, the campus conducts a 1 ½ day overnight orientation program designed to help new students get better acquainted with the campus and campus life. Participants stay in the campus residence halls and are supervised by professional and trained student staff from Academic Advising and Retention Services and the Office of Student Involvement. In addition, parents have the option of attending a one day program which coincides with the freshmen program.
Staff from the College of Engineering’s Engineering Student Success Center (ESSC) will be on hand during the second day of orientation to assist students in registering for classes. Most students will leave orientation with a class schedule in hand making for an easy start to the fall semester.
Registration for Frosh Orientation is an ONLINE process.
To register you will need:
- Your student ID number (nine digit number)
- Your PIN (four digit number, month/day of your birthday)
For more information about Frosh Orientation, please visit the Office of Student Involvement web site: http://www.sjsu.edu/getinvolved/orientation/
(Mandatory for all incoming transfer students)
The Transfer Orientation Program (TOP) is a one-day program that will acquaint you with the campus, and provide you with critical academic planning information. SJSU faculty and staff will:
- Discuss and explain key university services
- Review what's next before you start classes
- Provide an overview of what the College of Engineering has to offer
- Introduce you to your department, faculty advisor, and the staff advisors in the Engineering Student Success Center (ESSC)
You will receive a General Education worksheet filled in with your transfer coursework at the College of Engineering lunch during TOP. The program will also include an advising session with a faculty advisor in your department. In order to make this session most useful, please fill out the College of Engineering’s Transfer Courses Worksheet (located on the Forms page) with all of the major-related transfer courses you have taken. The form is an interactive .pdf; please save it to your computer, enter your coursework, and print it out. You'll want to bring the completed form as well as an unofficial copy of your transcripts, GE certifications, placement test scores, and your TAA contract if applicable. Your advisor may ask for these documents.
