The SJSU precision Flight Team spent last week at a National Intercollegiate Flying Association (NIFA) regional competition in Prescott Arizona, thanks to generous donations from Tradewinds Aviation in San Jose and from Richard Steckel, an SJSU Aeronautics alumnus.

The SJSU team scored a 2nd place overall -- GO SPARTANS!  Our 2nd place position will earn an invitation to the NIFA national competition in May, 2019, to be held at a member university in Wisconsin. Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, this year’s regional competition host, took the 1st place award.

“The competition includes both flight and ground events,” said Daniel Neal, the team’s coach and aviation lecturer and advisor in operations, management, and maintenance management.  “Flight events include a precision landing competition, a navigation event and a message drop. On the ground, we participated in a simulated comprehensive aircraft navigation and events in a flight simulator that included crew resource management and instrument flight tests."

Team members in attendance were Akshay Akarte, Kenneth Behlen, Edan Ben-Moshe, Barrett Connolly, Andrew Duff, David Evers, Charles Gonzaga, Mohammed Khan, Robbie Rickelton, Adan Rodriguez, Peter Ruth, Sam Shaw, Boris Simbirsky, Daniel Sims, and Linda Wu.

Region 2 of NIFA is the western region and includes Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, San Jose State University, California Baptist University, Cypress College, Mt. San Antonio College, Orange Coast College and California Christian University.  Also, in attendance was the flight team from the United States Air Force Academy.
